Grasses
Humans have always had a strong dependence on grasses. Wild grasses were the original source of all grain crops including wheat, oats, barley, corn and rice. Even most of our sugar is derived from a tropical grass – sugar cane. The grass before you has adapted to this dry sandy area by conserving water in its dense root system beneath the ground.
Jack Pine
Early settlers considered the Jack Pine to be an evil tree – probably because their crops failed to survive on the poor soil in which this tree is able to grow. Jack Pines d not release their cones at regular intervals like other coniferous trees. Tightly closed cones may remain on these trees up to 25 years until fore or hot temperatures in direct sunlight open them.
