Interpretive Trail – Post 4: Balsam Fir & Paper Birch

Balsam Fir

The Balsam Fir is the most preferred species for Christmas trees.  It can grow up to 20 meters tall.  Balsam Fir can be difficult for squirrels and crossbills to eat because of the large amounts of resin in the trunk and branches.

White Birch

Anishnabe people made extensive use of the White Birch.  Birch bark helped them to make canoes for transportation, wigwams for shelter, baskets for gathering and kindling to make fire.  The Ojibway word for birch bark is “Wiigwaas”, pronounced ‘Wii-gosh’
